Being an English Teacher , I was also excited to catch a glimpse of the English IInd year 2013 question paper in the examination hall. I peeped into a students question paper and I felt my eyes pop out of its sockets as I ran down the set of terrifying questions. One whole year of hard work and training to answer a fixed question pattern to a set of common Govt School children, was all washed out. What will my children do?? My God ! was this question paper set up by the 'CBSE Director' or 'Sasi Tharoor' was my first impression.I even thought of writing to Kapil Sibil ,who was always worried about school dropouts. Well , I personally feel that if a definite question paper structure is designed as per syllabus, the person who sets the questions should be aware of this.Exams must be an encouragement for students to gain confidence ,and not a tool for depression. The first exam if a tool for depression ,all the upcoming exams would surely be a failure...
Surely the HSE II English question was not set by Sasi Tharoor. He knows what good English is. Let me say something about the glaring mistakes that any good question setter would have avoided. Question 1: Imagine that Richard Wright, after he had become well-known, gets the chance to advise a young man who is about to start work as a teacher. Write, in three sentences, the advice that Wright would give the young man. Here, instead of 'gets' a man with good sense grammar would have used 'got'. Question 2: You are impressed by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam's speech "Let's Respond to India's Call". You wish to explain the speech to students of the upper primary section of your school. Write, in three sentences the main points that you plan to highlight. Here there should be a comma after 'three sentences'. Moreover, the expression 'explain the speech' also looks rather clumsy. Question 3: Write a brief letter to The Long-Nosed One, inviting him to come home to meet your grandmother, who has to remain in bed but would very much enjoy the meeting. Any good user of English knows the meaning of 'to come home'. It means 'to come or return to your own house'. Here the question setter should have used 'to visit your grandmother'. Question 4: Michael Donegan's foster-parents, the Carrolls wish to surprise him one day (before his illness) by arranging an unexpected reunion with Rose. Imagine that you are Michael. How would you express your gratitude to the Carrolls? Answer in four sentences. Here again there should be a comma after 'the Carrolls'. Moreover, how would a baby of nine months express his gratitude? Question 7: Adoor Gopalakrishnan was a judge at your Drama Festival. Impressed by your acting talent, he has offered you a small but significant role in his next film. Your parents, however, want you to concentrate on your studies and refuse the offer. What arguments will you use to persuade them to let you act in the film? Answer in five sentences. Here, 'What arguments will you use', seems rather 'Manglish'. 'What arguments will you make' is better.
Question 8: How would Victoria express her happiness to her grandfather on his 'return to life' ? Answer in five sentences. It is not clear what answer is required. Should it be in a paragraph? Or should it be in direct speech? And if it is in direct speech five sentences would be rather too long for the situation. Question 9: Do you have any 'speciality' like Vera in "The Open Window"? Express it in a single sentence. Here, anyone with a good sense of language would surely speak in clear terms. For instance, what is the 'it' in 'Express it'? If it refers to 'speciality', the sentence becomes 'Express the speciality in a single sentence'. I think any English teacher would identify it as a clumsy sentence. Question 10: Give the title of a film by Charlie Chaplin or Satyajit Ray that you have seen. Explain why you liked/did not like the film, in one or two sentences. If you have not seen any films made by these directors, you can write one or two sentences about a film (made by either of them) that you would like to watch. All the brackets and slashes within the sentences would be fine in a question paper for any other subject. It reminds me of a teacher who sent some of his students out of the class for making a nuisance. He did not know what to say to get them in. So he went out of the class and said, “Get out.” Any good question setter would have avoided all the brackets and slashes which indicate a muddled head. Question 11: Your younger sister believes that your parents show more affection to you than they do to her. How will you reassure her that they have equal or even greater love for her? Imagine that you are speaking 'to her and answer in three sentences. Long-windedness and Manglish again. Why shouldn’t we use ‘affectionate’ here? It would make the sentence simple and clear. There is lack of clarity also. It is not clear what answer is required. Should it be in a paragraph? Or should it be in direct speech? Question 11: You are in the habit of buying lottery tickets. Your teacher t1as advised you not to waste time and money on them. Write, in four sentences, your response to your teacher, either accepting her advice, or disagreeing with her. Your arguments should be based on reason and understanding. Here the two parts in the expressions ‘either accepting her advice, or disagreeing with her’ don’t seem to go well together. Question 12: You have read and studied Kamala Das's poem "Middle Age". What are your own views about this period of life? Answer in four or more sentences, basing your answer on your own experience of living with middle-aged persons (your parents/ relations/other elders). Again excessive use of brackets and slashes for an English question. Can’t this man ever speak in full sentences? ‘Middle Age’ is only used as the title of the poem. So what does ‘this period of life’ refer to? I have never seen the verb ‘base’ used like this English sentences. It may not be wrong, but it doesn’t look very nice.
Question 13: Prepare a brief bio-data of your favorite film star or sports personality or a role model in any field of activity. Imagine that you are sending the bio-data to the jury of a prestigious award which you would like your hero to win. You can use the standard bio-data format or write in eight or more full sentences. This question would be more effective if put like this: Write about any person in any format you like. (ha ha!) Question 14: Answer the following questions : 1) Explain the title of the poem. 2) What is the meaning of 'take heart'? 3) Why should we eat and play, and live in joyfulness? 4) Do you feel discouraged by the words of the poem? Try to explain your actual feelings on reading the poem. Again lack of imagination. For instance, what does the underlined part mean? ‘Discouraged by the poem’ itself would be sufficient here. If the question setter intended to mean the choice or use of words in the poem, I must say that I am more discouraged by the choice of words in the question paper. For instance, it seems that our gentleman (I hope it is so) doesn’t seem to know an alternative for the word ‘explain’. Or has he gone down to the level of our poor students? I invite comments from all English teachers
when I analysed the English question paper for the second years I understood one thing, that is the question paper is prepared by a person who had never looked into the pattern that was following in the previous years. It is a grave mistake or it should have been informed. It is not justice to play with the future of the students before us.Of course, for those students who have got sound basis in English may manage to write the answers but think of those majority of students who are struggling with the English language.Any how it is not fare. That is all
Physics +1 question was so simple and the teacher who set was well aware of the ability of the students in the class, and the paper gives more confidence to the teachers who are handling the classes.Actually science teachers are facing more problems in the classes now a days, this type of questions will encourage them to handle their classes effectively. There was a time for the Physics teachers that their classes were utterly failure, it was all due to the questions that set by the teachers at that time and not due to the inability of the teachers. The teachers were totally depressed at that time. But this was really a good one and will also help to increase the confidence level of the students as well. Let them to write the answers with more confidence, set questions for that.
@Arun Kumar T.K +2physics exam was very difficult it was hard and we can't complete the question within 2hrs i think the question was prepared only for confuse us
really.......those who prepared the 2013 physics q.p are toooooo cruel...they'll never understand the feelings of students...how many derivations, problems we studied..?...bt what was in the question paper actually????the first question itself was disappoining......oru kollathe kashtappaadukalkku oru vilayum kalpikkathavarodu sharikkum puchham thonnunnu!!!!! enthina njangalodu ee kolachathi?????? njangal verum plus two students aanu..allaathe einstein-um newton-um curie-yum onnumalla.....2 hrs kondu ethra chinthikkanam, ezhuthanam ennathinokke oru paridhiyillaeee????
some of the questions asked were directly from the text book( eq: 1st quest).... the main problems were lack of time and questions from deep within the textbook........ they have asked questions from those portions of text book which we tend to skip.....
16-3-13 plus two computer examination is very hard exam.the 90% questains are hard questains.i have request to the questain makers Why will you attacking to the students in giving this type of questain. We are only a students.not a computer. .............,.,..,.....,,..,...
dear computer comrades computer application(humanities) paper contained some easy questions.it was okay.but my concern is about teachers valuing it with out keeping in mind that these students are students with multiple D+ in SSLC.which ever paper go wherever but humanities scheme never gets prepared properly.. people who takes science and commerce values it and makes a mess of it with out proper scheme and if at all some sort of scheme is there no one values it according to scheme prepared.and we humanities teachers are dumped as bad teachers for negligence of others...
Sir Pls consider my suggestions In Computer Science (XII) Questions. Qn 9(a) makes some confusions. Instead of Multiplication Operator ,i think Addition Operator is more Suitable Qn 15(a)Finding/checking divisors using Switch statement is difficult for an average student.and the mark (only 3) is not sufficient for this Qn. Qn 19 and 20: Only bright students can answer these two Qns .
Computer Science(XI): The Qns mainly focus on Programming Areas. Most of the Qns are from C++ Programming. This pattern badly affect average students especially ,those who don't have strong idea in c++.
Plus Two Mathematics Question Paper is comparatively easy one. Only three or Four questions are considered to be difficult. The Qustion paper pattern is good. Only one "OR" Question is given- it may be noted as a fault. But still ,after attending the Physics and Chemistry Exams , Maths exam is a relief for the students
+2 students had to suffer a lot in the board xams..... the examiners treated us like some sort of experimental test bodies... first with english n then with physics.... they were experimenting on us... i don't undstnd the need to bring such big changes in the examination pattern at this point of time, without any prior notice .... since +2 board marks r going to be considered for all entrance xams from this year.....state syllabus stdnts r going to be far behind in entrnc xams as cbse board xams were comprtvly easy this year......
I strongly agree with Neeraja C S more over there were some more difficult questions which an average student cannot answer so i kindly request you to adjust marking scheme accordingly. As for qn 9 it asked which concept of c++ can concatenate two strings so i think the answer should be pointers.
@rajooo........ HSE II GEOGRAPHY exam was easy except questions on mineral resource, ocean route and transport which needs a knowledge of text book content...
The question from the area equipotential area is not at all clear..how can students understand that this is to find the magnitude using graph without any proper explanation?
Superconductivity is not included in the syllabus..other questions from electrostatics were also confusing..
@subashz76, oh that means, no need of textbook for geography learning and teaching, all the students who prepared for the examination were mere fools.. majority questions have no specific answers..
Yes, 19 marks absolutely free!!!!!!!!! for Physics. But we teachers cant tolerate this much. Why can't we allow our children to write exam better with one or two derivations ,problems, theorems and their proof......... so that they can write satisfactorily. This year question was so difficult.........ok.........but giving too much as compensatory marks is not healthy.
@rajoo... I didnt mean it that way, but one who attends and listen in class room and learn can easily write the answers in exam except those i mentioned earlier....... You can score high marks even if u dont have text book ... But should attend the class daily and listen and learn what a teacher teaches you ...
can any english teachers pls tell me.... will there be any such consideration.... like free marks or very lenient evaluation for +2 english like der is for physics.... +2 english paper too was really unexpected and shocking.....
@student No consideration for English and as the valuation progresses we find there is no decline in pass percentage. The question paper appears to be difficult but it is really and practically not.

+1 chemistry very hade qustin we are only a plus one studen dont forgot it
ReplyDeletesome of the questions asked were directly from the text book( eq: 1st quest).... the main problems were lack of time and questions from deep within the textbook........ they have asked questions from those portions of text book which we tend to skip.....
ReplyDeletePlus two physics exam very difficult , who preperd the question's i will kill him.... veryy bad teacher,
ReplyDeletePlus one Chemistry question paper is stetted for the students or for expressing the ego of the question paper setter. the setter may be a sadist.
ReplyDelete16-3-13 plus two computer examination is very hard exam.the 90% questains are hard questains.i have request to the questain makers
ReplyDeleteWhy will you attacking to the students in giving this type of questain.
We are only a students.not a computer.

ReplyDeleteqp (+1 and +2). post your comments, concerns and suggestions to be considered 4 scheme finalisation
dear computer comrades
ReplyDeletecomputer application(humanities) paper contained some easy questions.it was okay.but my concern is about teachers valuing it with out keeping in mind that these students are students with multiple D+ in SSLC.which ever paper go wherever but humanities scheme never gets prepared properly.. people who takes science and commerce values it and makes a mess of it with out proper scheme and if at all some sort of scheme is there no one values it according to scheme prepared.and we humanities teachers are dumped as bad teachers for negligence of others...
Sir
ReplyDeletePls consider my suggestions
In Computer Science (XII) Questions.
Qn 9(a) makes some confusions.
Instead of Multiplication Operator ,i think Addition Operator is more Suitable
Qn 15(a)Finding/checking divisors using Switch statement is difficult for an average student.and the mark (only 3) is not sufficient for this Qn.
Qn 19 and 20: Only bright students can answer these two Qns .
Computer Science(XI):
The Qns mainly focus on Programming Areas.
ReplyDelete+2 students had to suffer a lot in the board xams..... the examiners treated us like some sort of experimental test bodies... first with english n then with physics.... they were experimenting on us... i don't undstnd the need to bring such big changes in the examination pattern at this point of time, without any prior notice .... since +2 board marks r going to be considered for all entrance xams from this year.....state syllabus stdnts r going to be far behind in entrnc xams as cbse board xams were comprtvly easy this year......
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with Neeraja C S
ReplyDeletemore over there were some more difficult questions which an average student cannot answer so i kindly request you to adjust marking scheme accordingly. As for qn 9 it asked which concept of c++ can concatenate
two strings so i think the answer should be pointers.
How was HSE II GEOGRAPHY Exam March 2013?

ReplyDeleteis +2 maths exam easer than previos year maths?
ReplyDeleteThe question from the area equipotential area is not at all clear..how can students understand that this is to find the magnitude using graph without any proper explanation?
ReplyDeleteSuperconductivity is not included in the syllabus..other questions from electrostatics were also confusing..
@subashz76, oh that means, no need of textbook for geography learning and teaching, all the students who prepared for the examination were mere fools.. majority questions have no specific answers..
ReplyDeleteAny physics teachers please tell me,innathe manorama news paper le vaartha (19 marks free) shariyaano???????
ReplyDeleteANY TEACHERS FROM VALUATION CAMP PLEASE TELL.+2 PHYSICS NE 20 MARKS FREE AYI KODUTHU ENNE KETU.WHAT ABOUT +1 CHEMISTRY????????????
ReplyDeleteYes, 19 marks absolutely free!!!!!!!!! for Physics. But we teachers cant tolerate this much. Why can't we allow our children to write exam better with one or two derivations ,problems, theorems and their proof......... so that they can write satisfactorily. This year question was so difficult.........ok.........but giving too much as compensatory marks is not healthy.
ReplyDeleteyes absolutely
ReplyDelete@rajoo... I didnt mean it that way, but one who attends and listen in class room and learn can easily write the answers in exam except those i mentioned earlier....... You can score high marks even if u dont have text book ... But should attend the class daily and listen and learn what a teacher teaches you ...
ReplyDeletecan any english teachers pls tell me.... will there be any such consideration.... like free marks or very lenient evaluation for +2 english like der is for physics.... +2 english paper too was really unexpected and shocking.....
ReplyDelete@student
ReplyDeleteNo consideration for English and as the valuation progresses we find there is no decline in pass percentage. The question paper appears to be difficult but it is really and practically not.
